Applied Health Informatics Program (online)

 
A new ONC/HITECH funded certificate program in Applied Health Informatics will be offered at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing, Medicine and Public Health beginning in late summer 2010 pending Maryland Higher Education Commission review and endorsement.  This nine-month program, is designed to help students from multiple healthcare disciplines update and upgrade health information technology (HIT) skills to meet the burgeoning market demand for skilled HIT specialists.  The program will be offered totally online.
The program -- which is funded through a $3.75 million grant from the U.S. economic stimulus package (ARRA) Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act -- also offers $10,000 tuition support for qualifying students.    
The curriculum for the new program was developed by the Johns Hopkins University Health IT Workforce Training Grant, which catalyzed post-baccalaureate HIT programs in the Johns Hopkins schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health. The Applied Informatics Program, directed by Dr. Patricia Abbott at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing features online course content with a focus on applied clinical and community care. Students earn 12 academic credit hours which may be applied toward a master's degree. The cost of the program is $12,500 before the application of Federal tuition support.

Northeastern University is now offering the Master of Science in Health Informatics.  The Master of Science in Health Informatics focuseson improving health care through interdisciplinary education in healthcare and technology.

Duke University School of Nursing:  Duke University offers a distance-based program that uses both synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods for nurses who wish to specialize in nursing informatics. The program offers a Master's of Science in Nursing and a Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing. Students can complete the 39 credits required for a master’s degree in approximately two years. Post-master’s students complete the informatics courses in four semesters. The school accepts applications for both January and September start dates for the Master’s degree and a January start date for the Post-Master’s Certificate.   


The University of Washington Clinical Informatics and Patient Centered Technologies (CIPCT) Master of Science program features enhanced distance learning technologies to support learners nation-wide.  All required courses are on the web.  In addition to online course requirements, CIPCT students will attend a 3-4 day session on the UW Seattle campus once per year.   The CIPCT Master of Science can be completed in 18 months of full-time study (part-time study also available).  The curriculum includes core courses in health care systems, informatics, and patient-centered technologies.  CIPCT students take these core informatics courses with graduate students from multiple disciplines and complete an individual thesis.  The program offers practical exposure to research groups and health care organizations tailored to the individual student’s interests.   www.uwclinicalinformatics.com


University of Victoria, Distance Master’s in Health Informatics: The School of Health Information Science at the University of Victoria (BC, Canada) offers an online Master’s degree in Health Informatics, with courses in areas such as Patient Care Information Systems, Information Management and Technology, Clinical Decision Support Systems, and Epidemiology in Health Services Management. Our courses use a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods, and all are taught at a distance, with the exception of a two-week workshop on campus at the University of Victoria in May of each year. Oregon Institute of Technology's Bachelor Degree program in Health Informatics - The OIT program is an accredited program in the School of Engineering, Technology and Management. Case Western Reserve University/Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing - 

Students in Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH) MSN in Nursing Informatics program will specialize in an area of interest within Nursing Informatics. These areas include but are not limited to: systems analysis and design, emerging technologies, database management, and organizational implementation of information systems. An internship of one semester will provide an opportunity for the student to obtain practical experience as a Nursing Informatics Specialist (NIS) in a variety of clinical, educational, research, and administrative settings. The program includes 500 hours that may be credited toward the required 2,000 hours for certification as a Nursing Informatics Specialist through the ANCC.


Excelsior College-Master of Science in Nursing - Major in Clinical Systems Management: Master's program is 44 credits with a large informatics component and is administered almost exclusively online.                                                


University of Colorado Denver College of Nursing -Master of Science in Health Care Informatics -  Online Degree:  The University of Colorado Denver, College of Nursing offers a 34 credit Master of Science program for nurses to practice as informatics specialists. We also offer a 16 credit Post-Master's Certificate, a 16 credit Certificate in Health Care Informatics and a 9 credit Educator’s Certificate in Health Care Informatics. University of Phoenix: The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program, accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), enhances the knowledge and skills of registered nurses with baccalaureate-degree preparation. Jefferson School of Nursing has a Graduate Nursing Informatics program that is offered online. The curriculum is predicated on the belief that professional nursing is an art and a a science incorporating theory, research and clinical practice. All students enrolled in the M.S.N. program share a core curriculum. The Nursing Informatics specialty requires 36 credits. Full-time students can complete the course of study in 15 months beginning with a summer semester. Part-time options are also available.


Walden University is offering nursing informatics programs entirely online, and is intended to fit into the schedules of working professionals who are continuing their higher education. The curriculum of the Nursing Informatics program combines nursing science, computer science and information science as proposed by experts in the field. The specialization offers nurses information technology skills to enhance the safety and quality of patient care.
